Lithuania's Radiation Protection Centre reassured the public on Wednesday that the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine poses no radiation risk to Lithuania, despite warnings from Kyiv about the facility's critical situation. At over 900 kilometers away, the plant's location ensures that radiation would not significantly affect Lithuania's population or environment. The centre emphasized that international guidelines suggest potassium iodide tablets are only necessary within 100 kilometers of a nuclear incident. Lithuania's Health Ministry reported rising sales of potassium iodide tablets due to public concern, but Deputy Health Minister Danielius Naumovas urged residents to refrain from unnecessary purchases, stressing that the pills should only be taken under specific instructions during a nuclear accident. This comes after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky highlighted a critical situation at the Zaporizhzhia plant, which has relied on diesel generators following seven days without electricity.
